The Washington Post

Most recently at The Washington Post, I served as the copy and production chief for The Washington Post Magazine, the newspaper’s weekly general-interest magazine. I was responsible for setting all deadlines for each issue and working with writers, editors, photo editors, designers and web producers to make sure the magazine got out the door on time and met the Post’s high journalistic and visual standards. It also involved working on the online presentations of each story, writing captions and collaborating with editors on headlines, SEO and navigational issues. Here’s a sampling of special issues I had a hand in producing for print and web:

This special issue highlighted Americans’ substantive due process rights and the threats to their constitutionality. Articles focused on rights such as: the right to contraception, the right to live with extended family, and the right to refuse medical treatment.

The Creators Issue: Nov. 30, 2022

The magazine’s second-annual creators issue featured profiles on cutting-edge tastemakers including British designer Grace Wales Bonner, photographer and TikTok star David Suh, and designer Felicia Davis, who is pioneering textile technology.

This issue — featuring articles and visuals by journalists in “news deserts” across the country — was one of our largest ever. Among the underreported issues the issue put in the spotlight: the erosion threatening an Alaskan Indigenous community’s school, the mysterious deaths of grizzly bears in Idaho, and a West Vrginia pastor who has fostered a diverse congregation in an overwhelmingly White area.

This special issue featured stories, photos and artwork by former and currently incarcerated Americans. The American Society of Magazine Editors recognized our work with an Ellie Award in the single-issue category in 2020.

The Alternative Storytelling Issue: Sept. 16, 2018

The Washington Post Magazine broke tradition with this issue, which presented the events of the day in nontraditional forms of storytelling. It featured a song written by Ben Folds, a “Mad Libs”-inspired piece, a play, and poetry.

Jane Austen Summer Program

I serve as an associate director of the Jane Austen Summer Program, an annual four-day symposium focusing on the author's novels for academics and Austen fans alike at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. I oversee our bloggers and coordinate our social media. Below are samples of content I have created for the program. Videos

For the 2023 program, I edited videos of staff discussing their interests in Jane Austen and her teenage writings in particular.
